In 1881, retired Civil War Cavalry Captain Issac Conroe established a sawmill north of Houston, Texas. Little did he know that the town bearing his name would turn into the fastest growing city in the state and home to one of the best truck and car shows in the nation — Lone Star Throwdown!
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Lone Star Throwdown (LST) 2021 presented by Power Stroke Enginuities took place at the Lone Star Expo Center and Montgomery County Fairgrounds on February 26-28. You would think a venue the county fairgrounds' size would be plenty big enough, but you would be mistaken. LST is capped at 2,000 vehicles, and it sells out every year — even during the pandemic! Late February can bring questionable weather to Texas. This year was no different with rain on Thursday move-in day, making the grounds a little soggy in spots. Still, surprisingly, the show days stayed mostly dry and comfortable temperature-wise.
LST is traditionally a "truck show" — anything from sky-high 4x4s you seemingly only see at the SEMA Show to elaborately painted, down-in-the-weeds mini-trucks. However, as the years progressed, the event embraced all vehicle types, from original restored to outlandishly wild creations you won't see anywhere else. This fantastic mix of vehicles makes LST a super fun, relaxed event focused more on hanging out with friends than winning trophies. Whether you are into patina or amazingly intricate paint jobs, there is something for everyone at LST.
Not only does 2021 mark LST's 10th anniversary, but it also marks the 30th anniversary of the international car/truck club, Relaxed Atmosphere. With the Texas Chapter being in the center of the country, LST was the perfect place to celebrate and honor the club, with a designated parking area under the pavilion. More than 300 members attended, bringing approximately 100 of the "Nation's Finest" (as their tagline often reads) vehicles to the show. Meanwhile, C10 Nation occupied the pavilion's other half, making the building a must-see during the show.
The grounds were packed all weekend with participants and spectators alike watching the vehicles cruise the grounds or shopping the vendors for parts for their next project. Many of the major players in the automotive aftermarket were on-hand both inside and outside to talk shop with potential customers. Another heavily traveled building was inside the main show arena, where American Force Wheels invited their customers to display their rides while they gave away some swag to the crowd.
The weekend turned out perfect and it shows that people are getting a little stir-crazy to get out of the house after dealing with Covid-19 and winter weather. LST was a perfect excuse for auto enthusiasts to stretch their legs and breath some fresh air. Lone Star Throwdown is a melting pot of vehicle genres — off-road, on-road, or even no-road. If you are a gearhead, you're sure to see something you like. Make sure to mark your calendar for the last weekend in February for next year's show. In the meantime, enjoy the gallery of photos from LST 2021!
Vehicles cruised the Lone Star Expo Center and Montgomery County Fairgrounds all weekend as crowds swarmed in through the gates.
This Cummins-powered Dodge Power Wagon dually built by House of Hot Rods was absolutely next-level. Whether it was the color-shifting paint, the suicide doors or the exquisite interior, this truck was a standout!
If patina is your thing, Conroe, Texas, was the place to be. Patina’d trucks are all the rage at the moment and don’t show any signs of stopping with the price of paint. We really dig this big back window Tri-Five Chevy Fleetside. Check out the color-matched wheels!
Speaking of old Chevys, here is a wicked ‘53 with a perfectly tasteful look! The contrasting roof to the satin tan color finished off with some big steel wheels is done just right.
We said you could see outlandish, so how is this for a crazy creation? We don’t know where he lives or why he needs those tracks on an old Ford Tudor, but we can appreciate the craftsmanship!
How about a little horsepower with your truck power? Roger Grizzle brought his killer Pro Street Ford out to make sure everyone was staying awake.
This may be the most insane (in a good way) paint jobs we’ve ever seen! You could walk around this truck for an hour and not notice all of the details. Absolutely one of the most incredibly intricate schemes ever conceived. Well done to the painter.
Hey, we didn’t forget about the import guys! This has to be the coolest and cleanest little Datsun 320 on the planet! You can’t ever go wrong with black, gray, and red!
You want square bodies? C10 Nation had so many, they were overflowing the pavilion! Any flavor, any color — take your pick, as long as it was Chevy!
Ok, we had to leave you with this absolute stunner as a bonus! Bill Glud’s 1963 GMC Crew Cab pickup features a supercharged LSA under the hood and suicided rear doors, with an interior plusher than our home!
